As some of you know, I’ve been working on a project with my daughter over the last couple months. We both adore a good quirky, thrifted, or (especially) vintage coffee mug. ☕️ While my personal collection of mugs is quite minimal, I’ve spent the better part of the last few months stockpiling an abundance of mugs in my basement. Why? This week we launched @thethriftymug 🎉💃☕️😍The Thrifty Mug is an online and local shop we started for three reasons: 1. To help raise funds for the City Rescue Mission of Lansing @be_a_rescuer 50% of every mug sold will go to help the Mission offer food, shelter and hope to those in need. 2. To encourage others to #buyused first. 3. Offer other thrifty mug friends a carefully curated collection of amazing, second hand mugs. I know, a minimalist selling coffee mugs seems a little odd at first glance, but that’s the thing about minimalism. It makes space. Space we can use for rest, adventure, meaningful work, and to even start a unique shop with your daughter. ❤️ @abundantlifewithless is still a place where I write to make minimalism doable. But if you want to follow our thrifty adventures, give us a follow @thethriftymug We will be adding mugs to our shop as we find them from time to time. If you’re a Lansing area local, you can find our mugs at the @lfa_farmmarket in Mason. We also offer free pick-up at the REO Marketplace LFA Farmer’s Market location for all online orders. We don’t believe you need an over abundance of mugs in your cabinets, we do however, believe the ones you own should hold meaning to you or #sparkjoy 😍

I used to hate being at home. 🏠 It was a cluttered and chaotic mess. 🤪 Because of that, I filled my calendar 📅 with any and everything just to avoid having to address that chaos. For me, LESS was the answer. Less stuff, less hurry and fewer commitments, helped turn my home into the solitude it has become. It’s not “updated.” Our decorating style is “sharpie marker, hardened slime and acrylic paint drippings,” but man, do I love ❤️ being there. If you want a more organized home, if you want to wind down at the end of the day in a living space rather than a storage space, let go of the excess cluttering it up. #messyminimalism #becomingminimalist #declutteryourlife #declutteryourhome #tidyup #lessstuff #simplifyyourlife #simplify #minimalismwithkids #minimalism #lessismore #minimalistfamily
She’s brave, fierce, curious, and quirky. But most importantly, she puts others first...except when sweets are involved. She has NO problem snagging the larger cookie. 🍪 Sweets are an “every man for himself” kind of situation. This little daily dose of confidence and inspiration just turned 9-years-old. Ever wonder why nothing seems to stay “in style” for more than a couple seasons? It’s because “trends,” more often than not, are being manufactured by companies with solid marketing campaigns in order to make us buy new things. Even right now there’s a supposed push to eliminate skinny jeans. I keep hearing about how Gen Z wants the world to know that skinny jeans are out. But I’d bet anything it isn’t actually Gen Z trying to convince millennials to ditch their skinny jeans or their side parts. I can’t imagine Gen Z cares at all what Millennials do with their hair or wear on the lower half of their bodies. What we likely have here is a push from the fashion industry gearing up to force us into “updating” our wardrobes. It’s called perceived obsolescence. In order to get us to buy stuff we don’t actually need; they first have to convince us that what we own is no longer relevant. Trends that stick around for too long are bad for business. I went into skinny jeans kicking and screaming. I’m not leaving them without a good fight. ❤️👖💪 Read full article, link in profile. “What is Clutter?”

I wouldn't consider myself "zero-waste" by any stretch of the imagination. What I do consider myself, is a person actively working to do better. Over the last four years our family has worked to reduce our own consumption. Now, don't get me wrong, my initial motivation was 100% to save my own sanity. I wanted to reduce the amount of crap in my home so I could stop wasting my one short life on the management of stuff. However, it didn't take all that long for me to begin to recognize the environmental impact of buying, owning and consuming less. I grew up learning about the three R's in elementary school just like everybody else. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle ♻️. However, the emphasis always seemed to lie on recycling. In fact, I don't recall ever being told what it meant to REDUCE and REUSE. In our home, it's the opposite. We aren't all that great at recycling, but what we have gotten pretty good at is reducing and reusing whenever we can. Minimalism has taught us to REDUCE what we consume, and we REUSE, by buying second-hand where we can. In my newest article, I share 5 Compelling Reasons to Shop Thrift Stores First (link in profile). “We don’t need A handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” - Anne-Marie Bonneau @zerowastechef

Amelia and I just wanted to say THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE! Today marks exactly 4 years since I published my very first blog post on abundantlifewithless.com. 🎉 I had no clue what I was doing when I clicked publish. I think I just thought it magically went into everybody’s inbox on the planet. It did not. It’s been a crazy, fun ride, full of lots of teachable moments and unexpected plot twists. 📚 My absolute favorite part however, has been the many incredible friends this weird and wonky work has led me to find. Friends I never would have met otherwise. From minimalists with decades of experience, to those looking to declutter their homes for the first time, to writers I get to glean wisdom from... this place wouldn’t be nearly as fun without all of you. Thanks for being here, friend. 🤗

Bam! 💥 Just over a year ago I signed a book contract for a nameless book. Today, I sent the final draft of, Messy Minimalism: Realistic Strategies for the Rest of Us, to my editor at @broadleafbooks She replied by sending me the final copy of the book cover. 🤩 What the what!?! If you’re taking on something that feels too big to tackle, I want to give you the same advice my friend @becklowe12 gave me last spring. She said something to this effect, “You’re not going to not do it. You’re not going to NOT finish. The deadline will arrive, and you’ll turn it in. So stop worrying and stressing about how you’ll pull it off and just do it.” Thank you Becky, from me, and anyone else who needs to hear those words today.
