Here’s to another episode of Messy Minimalist Monday. I’m not quite sure what went down in here yesterday, 😳 but here’s the current condition of our living room. This is just a friendly reminder that living as a #minimalistfamily doesn’t mean you’ve got to follow behind your kids, making sure their wake is tidy one. In fact, minimalism frees you from exactly that. Do you have a reset day? My reset day falls on Thursdays. ❤️ My Wednesdays are packed, so saving Thursdays to reset has been a necessary delight. What’s a reset day? It's a day where I make no plans other than to stay home, (in my pajamas all day if I feel like it), and reset my head, home and heart. 💁🏻‍♀️🏠❤️ I make time for soulful activities such as reading, listening to worship music or maybe a podcast. Occasionally I’ll squeeze in a little writing first thing in the morning, but put no pressure on myself to produce or complete a thing. I’ll usually exercise 💪 at some point, because it’s one thing that consistently helps to reset my head. And I spend lots of quality time with my littlest who is only home with me on Thursdays for one last year. Lastly, I reset my home by putting away any lingering laundry, wash a load if need be, clear off all the counters and ditch 🗑 any clutter in my path that has been accumulating unnecessarily. However, the most important part about a reset day is to have extremely low expectations for what you'll accomplish that day. I’m talking extremely low, knowing that sometimes accomplishing nothing is exactly what your head, home and heart need most.
I absolutely hate this armoire. My husband on the other hand, loves it. For YEARS, it was packed full of old clothes and random items we never used. When we went minimalist, it was one of the many cluttered corners of our home we had to sift through. Today, it’s about 75% empty, and we could very easily re-home every single item within it. Trust me, I’d love nothing more than to ditch this oversized piece of furniture to make more space in our bedroom. My husband however, insists we keep it. It's always hard for me to let go of summer. I dread the impending cooler weather ever...single...year. I know summer will return just on time. She's reliable like that. ☀️ But summer is just my most favorite season, and favorites are always harder to let go of. When letting go, it's important we focus on the sweetness of what's next, instead of what it is we're giving up. So in order to avoid an inner tantrum during this ridiculously brisk 🥶 September weekend, I'm making time for some of my favorite things 😍 about cooler weather. 1. My favorite flannel: 💁🏻‍♀️I'm breaking out the fall capsule this weekend! This hand me down teal flannel is my favorite thing to wear during cooler weather... and I wear it often (some may say too often. I disagree). 2. Cider Mills: I love apple picking. 🍎 Really, I love picking any kind of fruit. I am however, really bad at actually growing the fruit myself, or any kind of plant for that matter. Well, I am pretty good at growing mold on expired foods in my refrigerator. 😬THAT, I'm an expert on. But growing produce? Not so much. Thankfully, we've got some local farmers who have it covered, along with some stellar donuts 🍩 as well. 3. Meals that take all day: We're rolling grape leaves today! 4. Football: 🏈 This isn't typically a favorite of mine, but I love watching my guys get really excited about something they've been missing for a while. Besides, it always leads to slower days at home that I get to use for reading, writing, baking and spending time with my girls. What are you looking forward to during this next season?
“I don’t have a dream home, I have a dream property.” -Jameson, 10 A boy after my own heart. ❤️ My son told me this, then proceeded to share with me, in detail, the property he hopes to one day own. It has a river for fishing 🎣 and catching frogs 🐸, woods 🌳, and of course enough acreage for a food plot, 🦌 ...obviously. Personally, I’d take a tiny home on Lake Michigan over the grandest home full of high end stuff any day. How about you? Dream home or dream property?
🙉 My son just started 5th grade band and chose percussion.🥁 Over the last 10 years of my #momlife I have skillfully crafted the #nextlevel ability to block out all noise as needed. My kids refer to it as me being in “Mmm Hmm Mode.” As in... Them: “Did she say yes? I don’t think she meant it. I think she’s in Mmm Hmm Mode. Mom, can I have $100 dollars?” I feel like my entire motherhood has been preparing me for this: fifth grade band. I don’t know if I’m ready! Send help! 🙉
I'm feeling incredibly overwhelmed today. No, nothing major has happened. I don't have a really great excuse to justify feeling so overwhelmed by every little flipping thing. It's not even the result of thousands of tiny things all adding up. As I've investigated my recent desire to crawl into a hole, I realized it's this... I've been living the #slowlife since March 13th and have grown rather accustomed to having nothing to do and nowhere to be. Now that the world is beginning to open back up, every commitment and activity feels like too much. Don't get me wrong, the world opening back is very much a good thing. However, it's important we also recognize that we are not obligated to resume our pre-Covid speed of life. I want to say that again, YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO RESUME THE SAME PACE AT WHICH YOU WERE LIVING BEFORE COVID-19! If a slower pace suits you, you can keep it. You can choose to leave behind the commitments that weren't serving you so you can continue to be available for the ones that do. Since becoming a minimalist a few years ago, I've developed the habit of letting go. When faced too much, whether in my home, head or heart, I respond to it by asking myself, "What needs to go?" Rather than bulking up 💪 and working harder, I instead, start pruning ✂️ as many corners of my life as possible. Sometimes it's stuff, and other times it’s unrealistic expectations, commitments, or a decision that just needs to be made already. Many times it’s a combination of them all. I'll be spending today, reflecting on how our home and life is functioning in order to identify the things that need to go. This small, cottage kitchen has hosted its fair share of large summer gatherings over the years.🍉 This year however, not so much. It’s been the simplest summer that has ever summered, ☀️and quite honestly, I’m not all that upset about it.
